Magic is divided into two basic domains, Arcana, the discipline of influence, and Elementalism, the discipline of control.

Elementalism is the easier to explain, for it is simpler in practice and comes more naturally. Simply put, it is exerting ones own will upon the physical world. The name is derived from the most common use of it, manipulating the four basic elements. Unfortunately, the limitation of this is that it cannot create anything, merely manipulate.

Arcana is significantly more complex. To perform arcana, one sends energy out into the universe for the purpose of accomplishing a specific task. This can range from altering the properties of something, to influencing the future to achieve a specific outcome. While Elementalism could be seen as being based solely on the physical plane, Arcana is mostly on the spiritual plane. The problem with Arcana, however, is that the more difficult the task, exponentially more energy is required. In addition, Arcana is incredibly difficult to use and consistently achieve results, normally requiring years of training.

Through the combination of Arcana and Elementalism, almost any effect can be produced. It is because of this that these events transpired as they did.

Long ago, in what is now the northern reaches of the Endless Ocean, there stood a grand empire, the likes of which has never been seen since. Over the ages they mastered Elementalism, Technology and Arcana, allowing them near complete control over all things in their domain. They flourished, for a time.

As all empires do, they began to wane. The First Oracle of Change was born, and her prophecy would be responsible for the deaths of millions.

She saw a vision of a strange stone buried far, far beneath the earth, a stone that held complete power over an element. A Prime Source, one of the four of legend. With the direction of prophecy, they searched, delving deep. Discovering ancient secrets. Awakening ancient threats.

They called them Sea Devils. An apt name, all things considered. Relentless, cunning and hungry, they emerged from the crevasse, numbering in the tens of thousands. Their incursion ravaged the empire, killing all but the mightiest of warriors and mages. Their Technology, though powerful against other men were pointless against a swarm of Thylen. Their Arcana would ensure mankind's survival, but could do little to the Devils directly. This left Elementalism, an art that to these beasts came as naturally as breathing does to us. They destroyed the empire, and as if to rub salt in the wound, changed the very face of the world, melting glaciers and ice caps, shifting mountains and changing the seas, so that where once stood an empire now lay ruins covered in ocean, these monsters new home.

What remained of mankind scattered to the few remaining land masses and were forced to quickly adapt.
