You know NIck, I think if you develop all of your characters as well as these two, your story could probably skyrocket up to one of the best I've ever read.

wow Del, that's... quite a statement. if i could ever write something that anyone could honestly say THAT about, i'd be thrilled. you've just given me something else to strive for with this story.

Well, I really like character development.  I would venture to bet I prefer it to story development, but that isn't quite true.  I don't know, I just enjoy well developed characters I feel like I could meet walking down the street, zombie Pokemon or no.

BTW, does anyone else not notice any foreshadowing/irony in what Hideki calls Harmony?  I thought 'Harm' was pretty....I dunno, ironic.

Dude, that part with Brock not remembering your battled made me straight-up, no joke, rofl.

This is going amazingly well! You have me drooling.

i had you and the other hardcore fans of the games in mind when i wrote that part. thought you'd enjoy that, just because you know that's how he has to feel.

I did enjoy it. It was a wonderful addition. Although it is unquoted, I have to agree with Del on character development being a more moving aspect of interest when I read, and you are doing a phantasmal job at it.

Chapter 6

The Fearow landed in front of the Celadon City Pokemon Center. Things looked relatively normal here, too, although the streets were almost devoid of people. This was odd, considering mid-afternoon was usually one of the busiest times of the day for shoppers to hit the department store and gamers to hit the casino.

Harmony jumped off of Big Bird's back and began briskly walking toward the tallest building in the city; the Celadon City Department Store. Hideki stayed behind for a moment.

"Harmony!" he called out. She was several feet ahead of him by now. She said nothing in response, she just stopped.

Hideki walked up to her until he had finally caught up. "Harmony..."

"What?" she said shortly, now turning to face him.

Her anger made him hesitate for a moment, but then Hideki got very close to her, placing a hand on each of her shoulders. His gaze was fixated on the ground.

"Forgive me... I didn't feel like I could properly say this to you before, when we were flying. I wanted to be able to look you in the face when I said this."

Harmony said nothing. She couldn't give into him this time. She wouldn't allow him to treat her like this anymore. Her eyebrows twitched slightly; this was her only giveaway.

Suddenly, Hideki lifted his head up. He was now looking directly into Harmony's eyes.

"I don't trust anyone; I never have. But I trust you. I believe in you as a person and as a trainer."

Harmony's stern look finally began to melt. She desperately wanted to believe him.

"Harmony, I also... I need you. I can't do this without you. You're right. I'm twice as strong with you. I'm going to- WE'RE going to need that strength to get through this."

"Hideki..."

"I don't just feel this way because you got mad. I've known it all along. I swear, my only motivation in trying to send you home was because it's what I thought was best for you."

"If you felt that way, why did you try to get rid of me..."

"Because," Hideki said quietly, "I was willing to try it alone... if it meant knowing you were okay."

"You're so dumb, Hideki," she said as she leaned in to embrace him. They stayed like this for quite some time.

"Do you believe me?" asked Hideki.

His frankness made her laugh. "Yes, Hideki... I believe you."

"We're going to be an unstoppable team."

She pulled away from him to look him in the face again. "We already are."

"¥9000 for a full restore!? You shittin' me?" an angry voice proclaimed as Hideki and Harmony entered the massive store. It sounded like it was coming from the floor above.

"No! This has got to be illegal! Unfair business practice or something. I don't know but this is wrong."

"Sir, given the times I think it's reasonable to expect an increased demand for-"

"Given the times!? 'Given the times,' you should be giving this shit away so people can heal their Pokemon! No one can afford this!"

When they reached the top of the stairs to the second floor, they saw the source of the commotion. A young man was in a heated argument with another, slightly older man, who appeared to be the manager of the store.

"Yeah, you take advantage of the people then. All the good that money will do you when a zombie Sandshrew is gnawing on your ass."

The younger man forcefully handed the manager a stack of bills, stuffed a sizable pile of various healing goods into a bag, and stormed off toward the staircase that Harmony and Hideki were standing in front of.

He appeared to be somewhere in his mid-twenties, with medium-length black hair sticking out of his white hat. A rocket ship was pictured on the hat, but it wasn't similar to any Team Rocket logo Hideki or Harmony had ever seen. He wore a black and green jacket zipped up halfway over a white T-shirt. He was tall, and carried himself with confidence.

"You here to stock up for the zombie outbreak?" he asked them.

"Yeah," Hideki said, "I um... hear they've kind of jacked up the prices."

"The prices aren't all that's jacked up here," he said as he shot a glare back at the manager. "Not like we have much of a choice. I knew they'd be doing this here, but the smaller PokeMarts aren't being any fairer."

"Three cheers for corporate greed, right?" Harmony offered.

The young man looked at Harmony with a quizzical look on his face. She began to blush, as she feared her comment came out as stupid. It sounded good in her head, anyway. Her social anxiety was kicking in again, and she leaned in closer to Hideki.

"Hold on," the young man said, still looking at Harmony, "I know you..."

"Look buddy, she's had a bad day," Hideki said, sensing her discomfort and wrapping an arm around her, "give her a break, alright?"

"No, wait... Harmony? The champion of the Indigo League?"

"You'd be amazed how often she gets that. Seriously, you don't know-"

"Yeah," Harmony interrupted, "that's me."

"Well, it's nice to meet you, Harmony," the young man said, extending a hand. "You... may or may not have heard of me, I wouldn't be surprised either way. Name's Xerxes... I was champion a little before you came along."

"Nice to meet you too," she said, shaking his hand, "I um... can't say I'm familiar with you... I'm not much of a historian..."

"Historian?" Xerxes laughed. "I can't be more than ten years older than you, kid."

"I'm familiar with you," Hideki said, "you were the Kanto champion before me too. Before the Kanto and Johto Leagues combined. I'm Hideki."

"Yeah, that's right. I'm impressed. Although I'm not too familiar with you I'm afraid..."

"My tenure was short. I forfeited it when Mitsuo Oak went after it a second time."

"Ah. That would've been about the time I was doing Johto then." Xerxes explained.

"I hope you'll excuse us Xerxes," Hideki said, "but we kind of need to get going. We still need to find a place to hold out."

"Actually, on that topic," Xerxes interjected, "I know this is sudden, but I was hoping to find a group of strong trainers to form a group with. You guys fit that bill perfectly. We're going to be up against a potentially huge number of Pokemon whose sole purpose in life is now to eat us. We'd all be better off with a few more people to watch our backs."

Hideki and Harmony knew he had a point, but both had reservations. Hideki because of his trust issues, Harmony because of her social anxiety. Xerxes could tell they were unsure.

"Look, I'm sorry, I'm sure you two have your own thing figured out..."

"No, it's fine," Hideki said, "but... would you mind if Harmony and I talked about this first?"

"No, please do," said Xerxes with a smile, "I only want to join you if you're both on board. Let's see... you guys still have some shopping to do. I'll wait in the lobby for you. Get your supplies, talk it over, and let me know what you decide."

"Hang on, Harmony," Hideki said as she examined the counter with the top-of-the-line healing items, "I wanna try the roof first."

The two took the elevator up to the top floor of the department store; from there they took the stairs up to the roof.

"I bet they haven't bothered to tamper with the prices of the machines yet... Hot damn! Lemonade is still ¥350."

"I get it!" exclaimed Harmony. "These can not only heal our Pokemon, but we can also drink them ourselves! Great thinking, Hideki!"

Although they had found a cost-effective way to stock up for the worst-case scenario, the machines still only dispensed one drink at a time, so getting all the drinks they needed was a tedious, time-consuming process. On the other hand, it gave them time to talk about Xerxes.

"I guess I just don't understand how you, of all people, can be so willing to bring this guy in," Harmony said.

"Harmony... as much faith as I have in you, we have to accept that we may not be able to do this by ourselves. This could potentially spread to every wild Pokemon in the region. The sheer numbers may very well overwhelm us."

"That's true..." she said grudgingly. "Still..."

"You don't like it," Hideki said, finishing her thought for her. "I know. But this isn't just some guy, Harmony. This is a former champion. This guy is as strong as we are, and even more experienced."

Harmony had no argument for that.

"It makes sense, Harm. We're better off with him."

"I know you're right, I know. I just... I don't do so well with people..."

"He seems like a nice guy, though."

"He does..."

"I promise you have nothing to worry about, Harmony."

She wasn't sure why, but his promise somehow put her at ease. She was really beginning to rely on him for comfort. A little too much, she feared.

"Okay Hideki," she finally said, "I say... we bring him in."

"Impeccable timing as always, my dear," said Hideki, "my machine just ran out of everything."

"Mine's still dispensing, but I think we've got enough," noted Harmony, looking at their now stuffed-to-the-brim backpacks. Both laughed at their over-indulgence. "Maybe we can dump some of this off on Xerxes," Harmony suggested.

The two took the elevator back down to the second floor, where they spent their remaining funds on some basic necessities for themselves, mostly in the form of non-perishable food items such as nuts and dried fruit. They then took the stairs back down to the entrance.

"Well there you are!" said Xerxes. He was leaned all the way back in a chair against a wall, his feet spread out on a table in front of him. "What exactly WERE you guys doing up there?"

Hideki and Harmony both placed their heavy bags on the table, each landing with a thud. Cans of lemonade and cola and bottles of water stuck out of each bag.

"Oh my God," Xerxes said, "The vending machines. I am such an idiot."

"No worries," Harmony said cheerfully, "We have more than enough for all three of us."

"Where to next, guys?" Xerxes asked. "Do either of you have a plan?"

"I wanted to check on Cerulean City next," said Hideki, "if Pewter falls, the infection will go through Mt. Moon and then onto Cerulean. I wanna make sure Misty's prepared for that."

"Oh... didn't you hear?" Xerxes said, "Pewter has already been overrun. It broke the news right about the time I got to Celadon."

"That means we must've just missed it..." noted Harmony.

"Also means they couldn't have put up much of a fight," said Hideki, "and it's probably an airborne virus, if it got to Brock's Pokemon. We gotta move."

Hideki brought Big Bird out of his ball; he and Harmony both climbed on his back.

"Xerxes," said Hideki, "do you have something that knows Fly?"

"You can borrow Birdo if you'd like," offered Harmony.

"Heh... I see you guys are already underestimating me. Remilia!" Xerxes threw a Pokeball from his belt, releasing a Crobat from its confines. "Well? What are you waiting for? Thought you said we had to move!"

Anther great addition! I really like how Hideki's "to the point" / "doesn't care about much" attitude makes him go to the conclusion that it's airborne and not worry about Pewter. It's really cool how almost every line of dialogue your characters have include their personalities precisely.

I seriously lol'd during the Xerxes full restore part.

no new chapter for now guys, just some musings.

even though Xerxes has been introduced, i still haven't decided on the fourth party member. i have decided on roles for a few other people though, would you like me to tell you what they'll be or shall i let you find out?

next chapter won't just be character development, i promise. there will be zombies. for those of you tiring of Hideki's and Harmony's drama =P

also, it was brought to my attention that my character's backgrounds are a little cloudy to some of you. so.

Hideki was the character i used to beat my very first nuzlocke challenge, in LeafGreen version. i also used him when i failed Emerald. he's named after me, in a way... Hideki was the name i adopted when i took Japanese in high school, after former New York Yankee Hideki Matsui. so Hideki is either named after me or a baseball player, take your pick.

Harmony was the character i used to nuzlocke Crystal and Pearl, but this story takes place before Pearl. as for her inspiration... she's a character i created years ago, when i first started writing/drawing things that were actually good. she appears in multiple things i've written/developed over the years. she was named after this.

...and on that note, Xerxes is the character I'm using for my Nuzlocke of Leaf Green. He's originally from my non-Nuzlocked game of Heart Gold, which are the Pokemon he's using. His name is the same as my second middle name, which many of you know me by.

Chapter 7

The three trainers touched down in the ghost town formerly known as Cerulean City. The city looked completely normal, except it was entirely empty. Every store was closed, the streets were deserted; there were no signs of life whatsoever.

"Is it possible they escaped?" asked Xerxes.

"As quickly as this thing got Pewter, it'd be a miracle if they did..." said Hideki.

Suddenly, Harmony shushed them both. "Do you guys hear yelling?" she whispered.

Hideki and Xerxes listened for a few seconds. Both silently indicated that they did not.

"Let's... just head off this way," Harmony said, pointing to the west, "I really think I heard something."

As they traversed Route 4 towards Mt. Moon, they noticed the ground was considerably wet. Odd, since Kanto hadn't had a significant rain in several days, according to Hideki. Pokemon corpses, mostly Sandshrew, Spearow, and oddly enough, Zubat, littered the area, all soaked as well.

"Guys, be careful," Hideki said, pulling a Pokeball from his belt but not opening it, "these Zubat had to come from Mt. Moon. This virus is making Pokemon leave their normal habitats. Anything could come at us from anywhere."

They had reached the end of the path and were closing in on the entrance to Mt. Moon when they spotted a girl and her Starmie. She appeared to be staring into the mouth of the cave; one hand on her Pokemon for support, the other clutched around a metal baseball bat. She appeared to be injured; so did her Starmie.

"Misty?" Hideki said.

The girl turned around. She looked at him for a few seconds before finally recognizing him. "Hideki?" she said in return, weakly.

"What happened here?" asked Xerxes.

"They came out of the mountain..." Misty explained, "they aren't normal Pokemon..."

"What about the people of Cerulean? Did they get away?" Harmony asked.

"Yeah... I got a call from Brock about zombie Pokemon in Pewter City... I managed to get everyone to evacuate just before they came out of the mountain..."

"Misty, you look hurt..." Harmony noted. "Are you al-"

"Did any of them get past you?" Hideki interrupted, in a hurried tone. "The zombie Pokemon. Did you let any of them in the city?"

"I didn't LET any of them in anywhere!" she replied angrily. "They just came out of nowhere. I didn't invite this."

"That's not what I mean," Hideki said, "Did any of them get past you or did you kill every one you saw?"

"I had no choice but to kill them all. Each one came straight at me as soon as it saw me. But yeah, I saw the first ones come out of the cave. I got each one."

"That explains the lack of bodies in the town," Xerxes noted, "or any signs of a struggle."

"I did not let them touch my city," said Misty in a stern voice that carried a hint of pride, "they almost got there... they made it pretty far down Route 4, but I managed to push them back here. Me and Starmie, I mean."

"Your Starmie looks like it's in bad shape..." said Harmony, reaching into her bag. She pulled out a can of lemonade and handed it to Misty, who opened the can and poured it over the Pokemon's body.

"What are you doing?" Harmony asked, confused.

"Starmie don't drink," said Hideki, "in fact, their... "mouths," if you will, are pretty basic. But they can still absorb the nutrients if you pour it on them."

"Pretty impressive, Hideki," said Misty with a smirk, "you must've raised a Starmie too, right?"

"That's right. It served me well against the Elite Four especially."

"Do you have it with you?" Misty asked.

"Yeah, why do you ask?"

"Well... this is just a theory, anyway, but I don't think Starmie are affected by the bug. This guy has been exposed to a whole swarm of them already, he's been bitten, scratched... he's taken damage but he hasn't turned."

"It makes sense, considering Starmie's natural ability to heal itself," said Xerxes.

"Plus, like you said, Hideki, it barely even has a mouth... so I don't think it could hurt you even if it DID turn," said Misty.

"Good to know," Hideki replied. Ever since he caught Starwho in Vermillion City, it seemed like it did nothing but bail him out of tight spots. It looked like he was going to need to rely on his old friend yet again.

"So guys, what now?" Xerxes asked. "Do we really have to stay here and guard the cave until we kill every infected Pokemon inside?"

"Actually, I was hoping one of you had something that could seal off the cave entirely," said Misty. "That way at least I know Cerulean is safe..."

"I can take care of that," offered Hideki. "Go, Rochelle! Use Rock Slide to seal the entrance to Mt. Moon!"

He released Rochelle from her ball, but to Hideki's confusion she didn't use Rock Slide. In fact, she didn't do anything.

"Rochelle!" he tried again, "Use Rock Slide on the cave entrance! We're gonna try to seal it off!"

The Golem twitched slightly, acting as though it had heard Hideki for the first time. It still failed to respond. Slowly, she turned around to face her trainer. Hideki's heart stopped beating as he saw the pure blankness in her eyes. His mind flashed back to her encounter with the infected Raticate in Professor Oak's lab. He remembered watching the blood from the rat's shattered skull splash onto Rochelle's rocky hide. He remembered that the virus was airborne.

"Rochelle, return!" he screamed in desperation, pointing the Pokeball at the Golem. Nothing happened. But Hideki's cry had activated something in the beast, for she let out a cry of her own. There was nothing desperate about her call though. In fact, there was no emotion at all. Just hunger. Hideki stayed frozen as his Pokemon charged after him at full speed.

"Shadow, use Psychic!" Harmony yelled shrilly.

Suddenly, Hideki felt himself being lifted in the air. Shadow wasn't using Psychic on the Golem; it was using the move on him. The Golem passed underneath the now-airborne Hideki; it had too much momentum to stop.

"Starmie, Hydro Pump!"

Misty's Starmie leapt into the air a short distance and sprayed a powerful jet of water directly at Hideki's Golem. When it was done, almost all of the rock-type's protective shell had been blown away, revealing a frail-looking brown lizard underneath. It struggled to stand, many of its bones shattered by the force of the blast of water. But like the Raticate before, these devastating injuries had failed to kill it; in fact, also like the Raticate, it didn't even seem to feel any pain.

Harmony ran over to Hideki as she gave her last command to her Espeon. "Shadow, set Hideki down, then use Psychic on the Golem... and go for the kill."

Hideki was gently but not slowly lowered to the ground. As soon as his feet touched the ground, Harmony was there to cover his eyes with her hand. There was a muffled pop and then no more.

Harmony uncovered his eyes, and felt the same thing Hideki felt when he looked into Rochelle's eyes for the last time; for she, too, saw nothing but an abyss in his.
